Fatal Left-Turn Crash on Highway 29 in Pensacola Raises Questions of Liability

A 96-year-old Pensacola man has died following a serious two-vehicle collision on Highway 29 at Hood Drive in Escambia County, Florida. The accident occurred around 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Authorities say the elderly man was driving his SUV southbound in the left turn lane of Highway 29 near Hood Drive. At the same time, a 33-year-old Pensacola woman was traveling northbound on Highway 29 in a sedan. Investigators report that the man failed to yield the right-of-way and attempted a left turn in front of the oncoming vehicle. The sedan struck the right side of the SUV, resulting in a violent crash.

The 96-year-old man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The 33-year-old woman was also hospitalized with serious injuries.

“Accidents often happen in an instant, but their consequences can last a lifetime,” said Pensacola attorney Rachael Gilmer. “In cases like this, determining fault isn’t always straightforward—and that’s why a thorough legal investigation is essential. Our firm is committed to helping injury victims and grieving families uncover the truth, hold the responsible party accountable, and pursue the compensation they deserve.”

Determining Fault After a Left-Turn Accident in Florida

In most Florida auto accident cases, a driver making a left turn must yield to oncoming traffic. However, every crash is unique, and fault is not always one-sided. Factors like speed, visibility, and road signage can play a critical role in determining liability.

If you or a loved one were injured in a car accident in Pensacola—especially one involving a failure to yield the right-of-way—you may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Medical expenses;
  • Lost income;
  • Pain and suffering;
  • Future rehabilitation or care; and
  • Property damage.
