Talcum Powder Settlements – Ovarian Cancer Claims

Talcum powder is the main ingredient of Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder, as well as the adult version of similar personal hygiene products.

For cosmetic purposes, it’s sprinkled on underwear, shoes, and the bottom of infants to absorb bad smells and keep skin dry. As a lubricant, it’s often found on condoms and diaphragms to reduce friction.

Thousands of lawsuits have been filed by women who have suffered ovarian cancer as a result of using talcum powder for personal hygiene.

Talc Powder Settlements

As of this time, there have been no large group settlements involving talcum powder and the potential link to ovarian cancer. Generally, however, large groups of settlements do not occur until such time as a few cases are tried before a jury, and the manufacturer is able to more thoroughly understand its financial risk.

Hopefully, group settlements will begin taking place in the near future because the first trials against Johnson & Johnson have all resulted in very large million dollar verdicts.

In August 2017, a jury awarded Eva Echeverria $417 million. At the time of trial, Ms. Echeverria was dying from stage 4 ovarian cancer. She had used talcum powder on a daily basis for more than 50 years. The verdict included $68 million in compensatory damages and $340 million in punitive damages.

In May 2017, a jury awarded Louis Slemp $110 million. At the time of trial, Ms. Slemp was being treated for aggressive ovarian cancer that had metastasized to her liver. She had used talcum powder for more than 40 years.

In November 2016, a jury awarded Deborah Giannecchini $70 million. At the time of trial, Ms. Giannecchini was undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for ovarian cancer, and had used talcum powder for more than 40 years. Sixty-five million dollars of the verdict was for punitive damages.

In May 2016, a jury awarded Gloria Ristesund $55 million. At the time of trial, Ms. Ristesund was being treated for ovarian cancer. She had used Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder for decades.

In February 2016, a jury awarded the family of Jacqueline Fox $72 million. Ms. Fox had died from ovarian cancer. She had used Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder and Shower to Shower for more than 35 years. Sixty-two million dollars was for punitive damages.

The lawsuits allege that the manufacturers of these products have known for more than 40 years there is a link between using talcum powder near the genital area and ovarian cancer. However, these companies intentionally made the decision not to warn.

The main talcum powder products used for personal hygiene are: Johnson’s Baby Powder by Johnson & Johnson; Shower to Shower by Valeant Pharmaceuticals; and Baby Magic Baby Powder.
