We have helped to secure more than $80 billion in jury verdicts and settlements since 1955.
Onewheel lawsuits claim that the electric skateboards unexpectedly shut off. The abrupt stop causes nosedives and sudden, often violent, ejections from the board. These malfunctions have caused numerous accidents and injuries, including traumatic brain injuries.
Our Onewheel lawsuit lawyers are investigating these cases. If you or a loved one operated a Onewheel electric skateboard and suffered an injury from this defect, contact us. The legal landscape around Onewheel injuries intensified as attorneys prepared for key milestones in MDL No. 3087. Ongoing settlement talks aimed to resolve the rising number of cases before the scheduled trials in 2026. Public awareness of product defects continued to grow, with injured parties encouraged to preserve medical records for litigation.
Reports of new injuries linked to Onewheel devices spurred additional lawsuits. These highlighted issues such as the “nosedive” defect that ejects riders unexpectedly. Meanwhile, plaintiff attorneys emphasized that Future Motion’s voluntary recalls of certain models were insufficient to address the larger safety concerns.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) pushed for broader recalls of Onewheel devices after noting hundreds of injury complaints. Legal filings expanded to include claims of Future Motion’s failure to warn users adequately, reinforcing demands for accountability in the MDL.
An increasing number of Onewheel plaintiffs joined the MDL, which consolidated cases involving severe injuries such as traumatic brain injuries and wrongful deaths. Discovery phases progressed, with expert witness depositions scheduled for early 2025. Attorneys warned riders to be cautious, as Future Motion maintained its products were safe when used responsibly.
Judge Beth Labson Freeman, overseeing the Onewheel MDL, set bellwether trials for April and June 2026. These trials will gauge jury reactions to evidence, shaping potential settlements. The court also issued deadlines for discovery and expert witness disclosure, emphasizing the complexity of the litigation.
Future Motion faced intensified scrutiny as reports highlighted that its devices remained on the market despite safety concerns. Consumer advocacy groups and plaintiffs’ attorneys called for stricter safety standards for electric skateboards, citing parallels between reported incidents and preventable injuries.

The OneWheel MDL continued its expansion, with 10 new cases transferred, bringing the total number of pending cases to 65. The focus remained on the upcoming settlement conferences and the possibility of early resolutions in these high-stakes cases.
Settlement discussions gained momentum as Magistrate Judge Beeler scheduled a series of settlement conferences, starting with a remote pre-settlement meeting in June, followed by in-person conferences in August and October. Meanwhile, six bellwether trials were selected, with trial dates to be set in July. The MDL grew with 10 additional cases, increasing the total to 65.
Settlement negotiations encountered complications when a Florida man alleged that Future Motion reneged on a $50,000 settlement agreement. At the same time, the MDL saw the transfer of 13 more lawsuits, bringing the total to 55. Plaintiffs proposed three cases as bellwether trials, which could influence future settlements if they proceed to trial.
A OneWheel injury lawsuit involving severe injuries, including a broken collarbone and brain hemorrhages, was transferred to the MDL. This case highlighted the growing number of claims against Future Motion, as the MDL continued to consolidate similar cases in preparation for bellwether trials.
Judge Freeman issued a comprehensive scheduling order to expedite the OneWheel MDL. The order set firm deadlines for disclosures, protective orders, and fact sheets, with key discovery activities scheduled to begin in May. This accelerated timeline underscored the urgency of the litigation.
The OneWheel litigation began gaining traction with the U.S. District Court scheduling its first status conference. Attorneys gathered to discuss the organizational structure and pretrial activities, with a focus on moving the case forward quickly, despite resistance from the defendants who preferred a slower pace.
While a class action lawsuit would divide a Onewheel settlement evenly between all claimants, an MDL considers each claimant’s unique circumstances and injuries.
Each Onewheel accident is different and results in different injuries and damages, so it’s difficult to say how much you might get in a settlement. However, the types of damages that claimants typically might recover in a product liability lawsuit include:
Onewheel (sometimes mistakenly written as One Wheel) is made by Future Motion Inc. The self-balancing electric skateboard features a single, large wheel at its center, powered by a rechargeable battery.
Riders control the Onewheel skateboard by:
The electric skateboard features an integrated smartphone app. This lets users monitor real-time data such as speed, battery life, total miles ridden, and more.
Models like the Onewheel Pint X boast published maximum speeds of up to 18 miles per hour.

Several factors contribute to the unexpected shutdowns and nosedives experienced by Onewheel riders:
The Onewheel is designed to provide “pushback”—a subtle lifting of the board’s nose—to alert riders when approaching operational limits such as maximum speed or low battery. However, instead of receiving this warning, riders often experience an abrupt shutdown, causing the board to nosedive instantly.
Conditions such as rider weight, tire pressure, wind direction, battery level, riding stance, and terrain incline or decline can unpredictably affect the device’s performance. These variables make it nearly impossible to anticipate when a malfunction might occur.
As the battery nears depletion, the Onewheel should signal riders through significant nose elevation. Unfortunately, in many cases, the device shuts off without adequate warning, leaving riders off-balance and vulnerable to crashes.
These defects prompted a recall of Onewheel electric skateboards.
Every model of Future Motion’s Onewheel skateboards has been recalled, including:
These devices pose a significant risk of severe injury or death.
On November 16, 2022, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a stark warning. The agency aimed to warn consumers to stop using all Onewheel products because of significant ejection hazards.
The commission highlighted Future Motion’s refusal to conduct an acceptable recall despite acknowledging the risks associated with their devices. The CPSC’s statement emphatically urged consumers to stop their use of their Onewheel skateboards. The warning also advised consumers not to buy Onewheel electric skateboards to prevent further injuries.
Future Motion’s CEO responded to the CPSC’s warning by publicly disputing the claims in a statement on TikTok. The company stated that the CPSC did not find any issues with Onewheel devices. They also said the products are not considered dangerous—they are just misunderstood.
A company spokesperson stated, “The federal agency is attempting to dismantle our business… we respectfully decline [the recall request].”
Following continued reports of injuries and fatalities, Future Motion eventually agreed to support a comprehensive recall in September 2023. This recall affected approximately 300,000 Onewheel units. According to the recall, exceeding Onewheel’s operational limits could result in the device’s failure to balance the rider, leading to severe crashes.
This delayed response has raised significant concerns, especially for individuals injured between the initial and subsequent CPSC announcements. People have criticized the prolonged availability of the defective product, which could impact settlement amounts of legal claims.
The CPSC reported dozens of accidents linked to electric skateboards, including four fatalities between 2019 and 2021. Other incidents involved severe injuries such as:
Future Motion lawsuits have surged in the wake of safety issues with the company’s Onewheel skateboard.
Victims across the nation have reported severe injuries resulting from sudden stops and nosedives while using the Onewheel. An increasing number of victims have filed lawsuits in federal courts. This upswell led to the consolidation of these cases into a class action multidistrict litigation (MDL) in California.
This consolidation allows for coordinated pretrial proceedings and streamlined discovery processes. Selected bellwether cases will undergo trial to assess liability and damages, providing a framework for potential global settlement agreements that aim to compensate all affected individuals adequately.
