Healthy humans have two kidneys, although only one is necessary. The kidneys' primary function is to rid the body of waste products, excess water, and sodium in the blood. The kidneys drain urine into the bladder, which expands as it accumulates, sending nerve signals to the brain indicating the need to urinate.
