88-Year-Old Woman Struck by Dump Truck in Pensacola While Crossing Street in Motorized Wheelchair

A serious pedestrian accident involving an elderly woman in a motorized wheelchair occurred Wednesday morning, May 21, 2025, on Mobile Highway near West Fairfield Drive in Escambia County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the 88-year-old Pensacola woman was crossing Mobile Highway in her motorized wheelchair around 10:15 a.m. when she was struck by a northbound dump truck. The vehicle, operated by a 40-year-old Pensacola man, hit the woman and entrapped her beneath the truck, FHP reported.

Emergency medical services quickly responded, and the victim was transported with what have been described as minor injuries. However, any collision between a large commercial vehicle and a vulnerable pedestrian—particularly an elderly individual using a mobility aid—raises serious concerns about driver awareness, commercial vehicle safety, and legal liability.

“Fortunately the woman in this accident suffered only minor injuries, according to reports,” said Pensacola car wreck attorney Rachael Gilmer. “Unfortunately, this is often not the case when a pedestrian is involved in a collision with a large vehicle like a dump truck. Those injuries can be life altering – devastating.”

Legal Considerations for Pedestrian Accidents Involving Motorized Wheelchairs

Florida law treats motorized wheelchair users as pedestrians, and drivers are required to yield to them in crosswalks and other pedestrian-designated areas. When a commercial vehicle such as a dump truck strikes a pedestrian, several potential factors may be examined in a legal case:

  • Driver negligence or inattention;
  • Failure to yield the right of way;
  • Visibility issues or blind spots on large trucks;
  • Speed and traffic conditions;
  • Whether the crosswalk or pedestrian signal was active.

Even when injuries are initially reported as “minor,” elderly victims often face long recovery times, increased medical complications, and a diminished quality of life after such trauma. In many cases, the long-term impact on the victim and their family far exceeds initial emergency care costs.
