On February 14, 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan peanut butter or Great Value peanut butter due to risk of contamination with Salmonella. An ongoing inspection of the ConAgra’s Sylvester, GA processing plant is still underway, but the FDA has confirmed samples collected revealed the presence of Salmonella. Tests conducted by several states also found Salmonella in multiple open jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter from consumers.
The FDA is advising any consumers, institutional food establishments and other food service providers to discard Peter Pan peanut butter or any Great Value peanut butter beginning with the product code 2111.
The FDA has also learned that the ConAgra plant in Sylvester, GA, sent bulk Peter Pan peanut butter to its plant in Humboldt, TN. Anyone who has eaten peanut butter from these companies and who have experienced any symptoms of Salmonella (see below), should contact their doctor or health care provider immediately and report the illnesses to their state or local health authorities.

ConAgra is recalling all Peter Pan peanut butter and all Great Value peanut butter beginning with product code 2111. The company’s recall extends to products made since December 2005.
March 13, 2007 Update: The local health department is receiving requests from residents to test peanut butter. The Escambia County Health Department is not testing peanut butter related to the Salmonella Tennessee outbreak. The following private labs will test foods; the cost for testing varies depending on the lab.
